Sudan's formal medical education traces back to 1924 with the establishment of the Kitchener School of Medicine. Genomic and genetic research in Sudan runs through the Institute of Endemic Diseases (IEND), University of Khartoum, founded in 1993 — where pioneering scholars have worked in molecular biology and human genetics for over three decades.
Prof. Muntaser Ibrahim, who leads IEND's molecular biology division, co-founded both the African Society of Human Genetics and the Sudanese National Academy of Sciences, having supervised more than 40 Masters and PhD researchers. Alongside him, distinguished researchers including Prof. Maowia Mukhtar, Dr. Muzamil Mahdi Abdel Hamid, and Dr. Hiba Salah-Eldin Mohamed have published seminal papers on PCR-based leishmaniasis diagnostics, malaria vaccine targets, and the genetic mapping of Sudanese population history.
This scholarly continuum remains vibrant. A landmark 2025 study sequenced 125 whole genomes across five Sudanese ethnolinguistic groups — Beja, Copts, Fulani, Fur, and Mahas — identifying over one million novel genetic variants and demonstrating ancestral malaria adaptation signatures.
Our mandate is not to reinvent this discipline — it is to widen the doorway into it. Molecular GemIInI exists to translate genomic and molecular diagnostics out of isolated academic silos and into the hands of medical scholars, residents, and doctors across Sudan and the diaspora.
Founder of the Institute of Endemic Diseases (1993), and the reason there was ever a laboratory in Sudan dedicated to this work at all. Every researcher who has passed through IEND since — including everyone named on this page — is working inside a foundation he built.
In 2015, a medical student knocked on his door and said he wanted to leave clinical rotations and stay in the lab. Prof. Muntaser handed him the keys, told the lab manager to look after him, and gave him books to read. That student is now GA-000.
In early 2023, at what turned out to be IEND's last research planning meeting before the war — research groups on COVID, hepatitis C, TB genomics, and the Sudanese Genome Project were each presenting their plans — that same student asked a question about genomic literacy policy: how do we explain this to the general population, in their own language, starting from school? Prof. Muntaser told him, on the spot, to launch a national scientific literacy program. Two weeks later, the war began.

Sudan's own philosophy-of-science tradition runs alongside this work too — Research and Development in the Sudan (Håkan Törnebohm and Tore Nordenstam, with Ibrahim Ahmed Omer, Khartoum University Press, 1985) is part of that lineage. Nordenstam himself taught philosophy at the University of Khartoum from 1961 to 1998.
